My Favorite Beauty Products of January

Richie Allyn

These are supposed to be my favorite beauty products of January, and although we are talking about that, they are all centered around hair, specifically wash-and-go products.

A year ago, I started my wash-and-go journey. I was sent products from Miche Beauty, and although nervous about trying a new style, I was excited to test the products. My first attempt consisted of using every product in the line: the detoxing shampoo, deep conditioner, gel, and mousse. The results were cute, but I also wanted MORE definition. For my next attempt, I used everything but the gel. The gel was good, but it also caused a lot of flaking, and again, I was looking for more definition. The second attempt was cute as well, but something was missing.

I remember talking to a friend, and she mentioned that she was using The Doux collection. She loved the results, so although I was curious, I was also skeptical because our hair textures are different… very different, and what works for one might not work for the other. The funny thing is, I had about five different products from the Doux (thanks to Mom). She bought almost the entire line, but nothing worked for her. I should note that our hair textures are different as well. I was over the style and onto the next hairstyle, so that journey was paused. Fast forward to the end of last year (ironically, around the same time I tried a wash-and-go the year prior), I was scrolling on Pinterest looking for my next hairstyle. Curls. All I saw were curls, so I took that as a sign. I grabbed The Doux Big Poppa Gel and went to work.

That product alone had my curls looking so good before I even diffused it. Once diffused, I used the pineapple method to stretch the curls overnight. The result took some time to get used to because my afro was small, and I like it big. The curls were shiny, bouncy, defined, and lasted for a week. By day three, my afro got bigger, and the curls got looser. The results were it.

I decided not to refresh my curls but to start over from scratch, adding a product I’ve used before: Miche Beauty Sculpt Curl Defining Gel, mixed with the Big Poppa Gel. Immediate flaking! The curls were just as cute as before, but it was way too much flaking. The curls were also very tight, meaning my afro was small on the first and second day. What did I do? Wash the product out and redid my hair. This time, I used The Doux Pop Lock Curly Forming Glaze. The product was sticky and had a strong scent, and I also noticed that my curls looked a little different. The product didn’t provide enough definition, but I loved that my afro was BIG the next day.

What I was missing from my wash-and-go combo was a moisturizer. I needed a product that not only defined my curls but kept them moisturized. Instead of buying something new, I looked for what I had, and I came across a product the brand A Naturale Rose sent me. It was their Hydrating Hair Butter. The product contains mainly shea butter and chebe, and also provides long-lasting moisture, so of course, I had to put it to the text. This time, I started off with the hydrating butter, detangled my hair, followed that with the Big Poppa gel, detangled again, and then ended with the Mousse Def mousse. THIS was my combo. This was the combo I was missing! Curls were defined, and moisture was provided, and the curls lasted for a week.
