How to Achieve an At-Home Silk Press

Ladies it’s almost silk press season! Every year I get excited for this season and to wear my real hair out (for longer than a week), but I never do. I sit and scroll on Pinterest looking for silk presses, getting my hopes up, just to end up putting my hair back into a protective style. This year, I’m going to TRY to embrace silk press season and wearing my real hair out more.

I haven’t got a silk press done professionally in about 4 years (I know). It ended up not lasting me that long because it was the middle of summer and it rained the next day. I actually got a roller set and was in love with the results. I love volume, big hair, I need a bounce and the results gave just that. I ended up buying some Velcro rollers to roll my hair up at night.

Now I have tried plenty of times to do my own silk press and I think I finally found the method and products that work to achieve an at-home silk press. For one, I don’t think it really matters what shampoo or conditioner you use. I juggle between Aussie Paraben-Free Miracle Moist Shampoo with Avocado and Jojoba and Crème of Nature Argan Oil Intensive Treatment. I think the real key is to let your conditioner sit in your hair for a little and when I say a little, I mean 30 minutes or more. I sometimes sit with my conditioner in for an hour. The results ARE different.

Once the conditioner is rinsed out, I like to use Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum on damp hair. This is a major key for a good silk press. You can either use this on damp hair or dry hair, but I prefer to use it on damp hair. I use one pump on each section, detangle my hair with a paddle brush and start blow drying it with that same brush. After a few rounds with the paddle brush, I then use a bristle brush. This gives my hair a nice bounce and also gets it straight before even using a flat iron. You also want to grab a good heat protectant. My all time favorite is Chi 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection.

My current favorite flat irons are the Tyche Ionic Ceramic 1.5” Flat Irons and the Kiss Ceramic Tourmaline 0.5” Flat Iron and get to work. You shouldn’t need that much after blow drying with the bristle brush. Lastly, for the ladies that love a little volume, grab you some velcro rollers and duck clips to hold the rollers in and you’re all set!

-In the pictures below, I used the ColorWow Dream Coat and not my usual products BUT the results are still the same.
